What is Freedom of Information?

The Freedom of Information Act, 1991 SA (FOI) which is similar to other Australian State/Federal FOI legislation gives you a legally enforceable right of access (subject to certain restrictions) to documents within the possession of Government Agencies, Local Government Authorities and Universities. The purpose of FOI is to make the business of government open and accountable to all.

FOI allows you to:

Access (as much as possible) documents within the Government's possession amend/notate documents that relate to you which are deemed incomplete, incorrect, out-of-date or misleading.
 

Whose documents can I access?

Under FOI you can access documents in the possession of:

Government Departments Statutory Authorities Boards and Ministers Local Councils Universities Public Hospitals and Health Units Regulatory Bodies

Remember, FOI gives you a right of access to documents in the possession of the Government. FOI does not give you a right of access to documents in the possession of the private sector.

Similar (but not identical) legislation applies to the Commonwealth Government and other State and Territory Governments in Australia. If you think the information you want is held by these other Governments, you will need to contact them directly, or contact Freedom of Information Consultancy Service for advice (who can apply on your behalf to seek the relevant information).
